The Victoreen CDV-717 Geiger Counter is fairly easy to use.  It has a self-calibrating dial that will allow you to calibrate the counter each time that you use it. (recommended) It also has a circuit check function that allows you to test the batteries. The unit is in an all metal casing and weighs under five pounds. It has a detachable Ionization Chamber with a 25 foot cable for taking measurements at a distance. The meter is quite sensitive and the counter needs to be handled with this in mind, any quick movements can cause the needle to move and give a false reading. This unit is a design that was commonly used by FEMA in the 1970's and beyond. There is no audio sensor or lighted display on the unit, but with a flashlight or IR camera can be used during night time investigations. CCPRS uses this counter during base readings at an investigation and during the vigil and EVP portions of an investigation.  The unit is fairly inexpensive and can be found on the web starting at around $65.00 USD.
